Insightful thoughts from Dr. Nikola Tesla

"When a child is born, its sense organs are brought in contact with the outer world. The waves of sound, heat and light beat against its feeble body, its sensitive nerve fibres quiver, the muscles contract and relax in obedience—a gasp, a breath, and in this act a wonderful little engine, of structure, is hitched to the wheelwork or the universe. Left to itself the engine stops; it has no power to draw energy from Nature’s inexhaustible store.

“The little engine moves and works, changes size and shape, performs more and more varied operations, becomes sensitive to more and more different influences, and now there begins to manifest itself in it a mysterious force. It becomes capable of responding to stimuli of a more subtle nature and of drawing, for its own use, energy from the environment. Gradually the engine has been transformed into a being possessed of intelligence, which perceives, discerns, does like others of its kind.

“The experiences multiply, the knowledge increases, the discernment becomes keener, the human being responding to the faintest influences, is awakened to the consciousness of Nature and its grandeur, and in its breast there is kindled a desire to imitate Nature, to create, to work itself the wonders it perceives.

”But the exercise of this power does not satisfy the mind, which rises to still higher, undefinable perceptions, not of this world, and inspired by them the artist, the inventor and the man of science give expression to the longing of the soul."

The Grace of Nature

Discovering Nature's Mercy

In our bustling lives, nature's mercy often goes unnoticed. Yet, it surrounds us, offering solace and healing. Nature's mercy is a powerful force that reminds us of our interconnectedness and the importance of nurturing our lives.

Nature extends its merciful touch to those seeking peacefulness and a place of refuge. A stroll through a serene forest, the gentle rustling of leaves, or the soothing sound of a babbling brook can provide much-needed respite from the chaos of daily life.

Nature teaches us the art of forgiveness and regeneration. After a destructive storm, it rebuilds, rejuvenates, and offers new beginnings. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope and the possibility of renewal. Nature's mercy invites us to forgive ourselves and others, allowing room for growth and transformation.

Nature's mercy is a reflection of its profound interconnectedness. I believe that God speaks to us through nature and it’s beauty, it teaches us the value of compassion, reminding us that we are part of a greater whole.

As recipients of nature's mercy, it becomes our responsibility to protect and preserve it. By practicing sustainable living, advocating for conservation efforts, and fostering a deep respect for the natural world, we ensure that future generations can also experience the grace and mercy of nature.

Nature's mercy is an invaluable gift that we often overlook. I love landscape art because it helps in bringing the beauty of the outside world into out homes, office and building where we stay shut off from nature most of the time (well, for most of us).

Unleashing the Happy Hormones: The Art-Science Connection

This fascinates me but the two aspects of how art and science intertwine that are at the forefront of art practice are:

1. You can physically feel the vibrations of energy emitted from different colors.

2. Hormones are released in your body when engaging -with focus- on art that actually increases the well being of our mental and physical health. Different colours absorb varying levels of energy from sources of light therefore the vibrations they release are a reflection of this. Researchers believe that we can physically feel these vibrations!

Biology Scientists have extensively researched and have evidence that proves: when we interact with art hormones such as dopamine and endorphins (known as happy hormones) are released in our bodies. These hormones instantly uplift our mood and can reduce levels of stress and anxiety.

Unveiling the Timeless Beauty: Capturing Realism in Oil Painted Portraits

Welcome to the enchanting world of realism in oil painted portraits! There's something truly mesmerizing about the way these masterpieces capture the essence of their subjects, bringing them to life on canvas. In this article, we'll embark on a casual and friendly exploration of the techniques, allure, and timeless beauty that realism in oil painted portraits holds. So, grab your favorite brush and let's dive into this artistic journey together.

The Art of Realism: A Brief Overview

Realism in art is all about representing subjects in a truthful and lifelike manner. It aims to capture the intricate details, textures, and nuances that make the subject come alive on canvas. When it comes to portraits, realism allows the artist to depict the subject in a way that feels tangible and authentic. From the gentle wrinkles around the eyes to the play of light on the skin, each element contributes to the overall realism of the portrait.

The Allure of Oil Paint: Enhancing Realism

One of the reasons why oil paint is widely favored for realistic portraits is its unique ability to capture texture and depth. The slow-drying nature of oil paint allows artists to blend and layer colors, achieving a smooth and seamless transition of tones. The richness and luminosity of oil paint add a captivating vibrancy to the portraits, enhancing the realism and making them truly come to life.

I still remember the first time I dipped my brush into a palette of oil paint. The creamy consistency glided effortlessly across the canvas, allowing me to build up layers and capture the subtle nuances of the subject's features. The richness of the colors and the depth I could achieve with oil paint ignited a passion within me for creating realistic portraits.

Technique Matters: Mastering Realistic Portraits

To create realistic portraits, artists need to master various techniques. Observation and attention to detail play a vital role in capturing the subject's likeness accurately. Studying the subtle variations in skin tones, the way light falls on the face, and the delicate interplay of shadows helps to create a convincing portrayal.

Layering is another technique that artists use to achieve realism. By building up multiple thin layers of paint, they can create depth and texture, replicating the intricacies of the subject's skin, hair, and clothing. It requires patience and precision, but the result is a portrait that feels almost three-dimensional.

I vividly recall the challenges I faced when I started my journey into realism. Trying to capture the delicate lines and tiny details was no easy feat. However, with practice and perseverance, I discovered that each stroke brought me closer to my goal of creating lifelike portraits that resonated with viewers.

Connecting with the Subject: Portraying Emotion

Beyond capturing physical likeness, realism in portraits strives to convey the subject's emotions and inner essence. A genuine emotional connection with the subject is crucial for infusing the artwork with life and personality. The subtle facial expressions, the sparkle in the eyes, and the posture of the body all contribute to portraying the subject's unique character.

I remember a portrait I painted of an elderly woman. As I spent time with her, listening to her stories and getting to know her, a bond formed. In every brushstroke, I aimed to capture not just her physical features but also the wisdom and strength that radiated from her. The result was a portrait that went beyond a mere likeness—it conveyed the essence of her spirit.

Light and Shadow: Enhancing Realism through Contrast

The interplay of light and shadow is crucial in achieving a realistic portrayal. Understanding how light falls on different surfaces and creates highlights and shadows brings depth and dimension to the portrait. With contrast of values, the illusion of depth begins to take place. The goal is to transform a two dimensional canvas into something that seems to have a 3 dimensional character.

The Beauty and Inspiration of Nature

Nature's allure is a constant reminder of the profound beauty that surrounds us. From the majestic mountains to the gentle rustling of leaves, nature captivates our senses and touches our souls. Beyond its breathtaking landscapes, nature holds the power to inspire, invigorate, and awaken the creativity within us.

1. Finding Solace in Nature: Amidst the chaos of daily life, nature offers solace and respite. Whether we find comfort in a serene forest, a serene lake, or a vibrant garden, nature's tranquility soothes our weary minds and rejuvenates our spirits. It provides a space for reflection, introspection, and deep connection with our inner selves.

2. A Source of Inspiration: Nature's boundless beauty serves as an endless wellspring of inspiration. Its colors, patterns, and intricate designs ignite our imaginations and fuel our creativity. From the delicate petals of a flower to the sprawling canopy of a forest, nature's artistry urges us to see the world through fresh eyes and find inspiration in the simplest of details.

3. Reconnecting with our Roots: In the embrace of nature, we reconnect with our primal instincts and rediscover our place in the web of life. We witness the interdependence of all living things and the delicate balance of ecosystems. This reminder of our interconnectedness fosters a sense of humility and encourages us to become stewards of the environment.

Nature's beauty and inspiration are gifts that enrich our lives and awaken our spirits. By immersing ourselves in the wonders of the natural world, we find solace, ignite our creativity, and reconnect with the essence of our existence. Let us cherish and protect nature, for it holds the key to our own growth and harmonious coexistence with the world around us.

The Beauty of the Human Face: A Captivating Tapestry of Expression

The human face is a remarkable canvas that showcases the intricacies of emotion, identity, and individuality. Its beauty lies not only in its physical features but also in the wealth of expression it can convey. From the sparkling eyes that shimmer with joy to the gentle curve of a smile that radiates warmth, the human face is a tapestry of emotions and stories waiting to be explored.

Faces are also symbolic of our interconnectedness as a species. They are a universal language, transcending barriers and fostering empathy and understanding. In their subtleties and nuances, faces create a tapestry of emotions that bind us together in our shared human experience.

As we navigate life, we should embrace the beauty of the human face. Let us appreciate the lines etched by laughter, the wisdom carved by time, and the uniqueness that sets each face apart. By cherishing the beauty of the human face, we honor the stories it tells and the connections it fosters, ultimately celebrating the incredible diversity and wonder of humanity.

Memorial Portrait

16 x 20 Oil on Canvas Portrait

I'm thrilled to have completed this portrait commission, especially because it was created in memory of a dearly loved family member. It's always an honor to be chosen to create such a special gift for someone. Sometimes painting someone's portrait goes beyond just seeing the face, it's about capturing the essence of that person. In this case, the subject loved fun, bling, and brilliant colors. So the client and I decided early on to add the gold and make the flowers a bit fun and quirky, to kind-of go along with this sweet lady's style.

To H*LL and back

March 4, 2022, was the day that gave me nightmares for weeks. Workers were at our house rebuilding from the storm damage we had because of hurricane Ida. A category 4 is something I had never gone through before. Our little community is on the north shore of New Orleans, far inland from the coast. This is an area that typically is never hit by a category 4, by the time a hurricane hits the coastal land the storms have considerably slowed down by the time it comes this far inland. Not this time. We had two very large trees slam into the side of the house, causing major structural damages. The effects could be noticed throughout the home with large cracks in the sheetrock. When the workers removed this exterior wall (pictured below) the studs were bent and twisted.

Ida Damage

The workers left for a break time & I was busily refinishing our front door, excited that all of the work was finally making progress. We had lived with the damages from the hurricane for months now and to see everyone coming together to do the repairs was a really good feeling. I decided to take a break for a few minutes and sat down on the sofa with a fresh glass of iced tea, a was watching the fire in the fire place. Then, All of a sudden, I heard tiny popping noises above my head in the attic. My heart started racing thinking, this is weird. Suddenly, the air conditioner turned on, and black smoke began to pour from the vents! I yelled out to my husband “SMOKE!!! Within 90 seconds out whole living area was filled with black smoke. I ran outdoors to call 911. It seemed like 10 minutes before they arrived, but it was probably less than that.

The firemen were awesome. They did all that they could do to protect our belongings. They even took my kids photos off of the refrigerator and placed them in the garage. The entire attic had to be sprayed with water and most of the ceiling removed. The chimney had caused the attic to catch fire and we were totally unaware of what was happening until the air conditioner clicked on. I am thankful that it was set to turn on, because usually in early March it’s still set to heater mode. I am thankful we were awake, many times we build our fires at night before bed time, we close the screen then go off to sleep.

The fire inspector determined that the fire was cause because of a “builder’s error”. He said that the wood should have NEVER been placed around a chimney the way this one was & that it was miraculous that we and our children were not caught in a house fire years earlier.

Our home has been gutted and currently we are waiting on the rebuild to begin. It has not been easy to find someone that is equipped to do this much restoration.

Art Studio

Some of my paintings were totally destroyed and many prints & supplies. I was fortunate to save the portrait commission I was working on at the time. I look forward to the day when the studio is all restored.

Murphy and Linda's Portrait

Murphy is a kind, easy going guy. I met with him several times at coffee shops as we inspired each other to come up with a portrait that would represent a journey together for him and his wife. The couple have been married since their youth, and they have always had pets that were a part of the family. So it was decided to incorporate of few of these little guys into the image. Typically a portrait will have a much more simplistic background but this painting needed to be more than just their images, it was to represent their story of togetherness.

This was always one of their favorite pictures, so the plan was to make it the central theme of the portrait.

After the painting was about halfway completed, Camille made the decision to use a different photo for Linda because this photograph was challenging to work with, especially when it came to the “details” (they say that the devil can be in the details, yep…art joke)

here are a few images of the progression

drawing and underpainting stage

Putting on a new face

The underpainting helps in determining the values needed in each area.

After spending an enormous amount of time on their portrait, our home caught fire. I waited outdoors for the firemen to arrive. Our entire street was filled with white smoke. Our neighbor said it was so thick she couldn’t see across the street. Several fire trucks came, a few police cars, and the paramedics. You know what they say “if your home was to catch on fire, what would you run in to get?” Yep, I actually had that thought. “MURPHY’S PAINTING!” Then in I ran, but I didn’t have to run through fire, just plenty of smoke. I darted up the stairs when I heard a fireman shout at me. “What do you think you are doing?” I shouted back “I’m trying to save something”. He then yelled out “get out NOW!” So I left (after getting the painting to a safe place.)

Our son and daughter-inlove we so kind to take us in to stay with them while we transitioned into a rental house. I had a makeshift studio in their sunroom. When my grand-darling would get home from daycare, she’d sit on my lap and pretend to paint. (Her brushes did not have paint 😁)

Because of hurricane Ida, the fire and the first and few other hurdles I had to cross…this portrait took longer than usual to deliver to Murphy, but he was graciously patient with me.

I have a video that shows the progression here from beginning to end:
